Abstract
The segmented chirp Z -transform (SCZT) algorithm introduced, and its mathematical derivation is described. Only a small FFT is used to assist the implementation; hence, the algorithm can handle a very large amount of input data with very limited memory space. In an example of a frequency spectrum calculation the SCZT is able to handle 30K input data, whereas the regular FFT can only handle 1K input data with the same memory space. The SCZT can calculate a portion of the frequency spectrum of interest, instead of the whole spectrum as the FFT does so, the dynamic range of the resultant values is greatly increased. A higher frequency resolution can be reached with the SCZT; for 512 input data points, the SCZT provides 65 times higher frequency resolution than the regular FFT does
