Abstract :
The portable common tool environment (PCTE), an advanced, distributed software-engineering-environment-distribution-service designed to provide efficient, reliable, and transparent access to hardware and software resources across a network of heterogeneous workstations, is described. A client-server model of PCTE distribution, making use of networking facilities, (NFs), is presented. The design criteria for such a model are discussed, along with problems encountered during its implementation, especially regarding the object management system entities, distribution, and process distribution
