  • Abstract
The author presents a method for subband coding of video signals. In this method, the difference between the input signal and the motion-compensated interframe prediction signal is decomposed into several narrow bands using separable two-dimensional quadrature mirror filtering (QMF). Each subband is then quantized by a symmetric uniform quantizer with a center dead zone. The nonzero quantized values are variable-word-length coded and transmitted together with their run-length-coded positional information. For interframe motion-compensated prediction, block matching motion estimation is used. Simulation results showing the efficiency of the method and the quality of the consecutive coded frames are presented. It is concluded that the method has potential for a wide range of high-compression video applications
