Abstract
The authors present a novel subband coding method, directional subband coding of images. In order to match human visual sensitivity, an image is decomposed into a low-frequency component and many high-frequency directional components using a separable quadrature mirror filter and a directional filter. Effective coding methods are then used to encode the component images. The method is computationally simple and avoids potentially difficult design problems. Computer simulations show that the method performs well
