Abstract
Using the perturbation method developed earlier, which takes into account both geometrical and stress-induced effects, we have numerically analyzed how core ellipticity and difference in refractive index between core and cladding influence modal birefringence and its sensitivity to temperature and hydrostatic pressure in single-mode elliptical-core fibers. The calculations were carried out for a set of elliptical-core fibers having the same cut-off wavelength (/spl lambda//sub c/=700 nm). Results of our analysis may be helpful when designing elliptical-core fibers with required sensing characteristics.
