  • Abstract
The performance of handover from an outdoor microcell base station to an indoor picocell base station in a mixed-cell personal communication system is evaluated using results from a computer simulation. The results indicate that with a walking pace of approximately 1 m/s and a sampling rate of 50 Hz, a block processing size of over 10 samples and a hysteresis window of over 5 dB, the number of handovers is reduced significantly. It is also noted that the lower the interference level in a system, the higher the tolerance to the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) requirement. Specifically, for a handover failure of 0.2, the difference for an interference of -60 dBm, the CIR tolerance requirement is about 3 dB
