Abstract :
Network switching technology has evolved to the stage where it is now possible to provide universal connectivity over the public switched telecommunications network (PSTN) for applications requiring bandwidth in excess of 64 kb/s. An overview of the switching technology, the associated network architecture, and leading uses of the technology based on real market applications is presented. The focus is on video and multimedia applications, because they are the most widely used applications for the switched wideband services in the near term. Important public network provider and end-user technology adoption issues are discussed
