Abstract :
A novel broadband compact left-handed transmission antenna loaded with electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures is presented. This antenna presented has advantages with respect to conventional patch antennas, for example enhancement of bandwidth, reduction of antenna size, and multi-frequency performance. There the composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) structures broaden the bandwidth and decrease the operating frequency, but the gaps and vias which realize the characteristic of the CRLH-TL bring in the drawback of low gain. To reduce levels of surface modes, suppress the surface wave and enhance the antenna gain, EBG elements are loaded in the ground plane. With the proposed design, a size reduction of 36% for the operation frequency of 1.8GHz is obtained with a bandwidth of 20% and a peak gain of 3.2dB.
