Abstract :
A simple multiple access analysis is presented for two types of multiband pulsed ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple access systems, both of which use modulated pulse train, one being uniform and the other being time hopping (TH). The analysis facilitates to obtain simple-to-evaluate and accurate error probabilities based on Holtzman´s simplified improved Gaussian approximation. It is shown that despite having the same processing gain, which is some multiple of the multiplication of the number of frequency bands in use, frames per bit and chips per frame, different combinations of the parameters result in different performances. In addition, the UWB system using TH pulse train is shown to perform better than the one using uniform pulse train. System performances are presented for various system parameters investigating tradeoffs among them and the validity of the standard Gaussian approximation is examined. The theoretical results are validated by Monte Carlo simulations.
