Abstract :
Transmit power control (TPC) comprises techniques and algorithms used to manage the transmitted power of base stations and handsets. TPC not only helps minimize the expensed battery power but also decrease the interference power to other users. In WCDMA standards, TPC command rate is 1500 Hz. A command is issue to either increase or decrease the transmit power by 1 dB using a single bit. In this paper, we investigate a 2-bit TPC algorithm that increases/decreases transmit power of the mobile by either 1 dB or 2 dB. The performances of the 2-bit and 1-bit TPC algorithms are compared by computer simulation in Rayleigh fading environment. We demonstrate that 2-bit TPC algorithm provides the necessary compensation of channel loss in multipath fading. As a result, 2-bit algorithm operates with lower battery power than that of 1-bit algorithm for the required service quality.
