Abstract
The authors discuss the performance evaluation of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) multiplexer loaded by the superposition of on-off information sources, both because they are significant representatives of real-life bursty emission processes and because they are amenable to some analytical investigation. For the latter purpose, the stochastic fluid flow approach is used. The focus is on discussing the extent to which the long-term average cell loss probability is a significant performance parameter and/or what else should be checked. Simulation and analytical results are examined to study the cell loss behavior of the multiplexer, in a long-term average perspective as well as in terms of looking at the temporal behavior
