Abstract
A large scale internetworking facility named Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) is currently being designed. Early prototypes are currently funded with the anticipation of limited operations within the next year. This paper describes GENI and discusses how it can be used to facilitate innovation in optical devices, optical communications and optical networking.
