Abstract :
This paper deals mainly with signal controllers which control a single intersection, using information from detectors on the junction approaches, at varying distances from the stop line. This kind of traffic control is designated micro-control. A brief overview of conventional traffic responsive signal control methods and some of the problems which may be encountered in the attempt to combine the ability to deal with a number of nonlinearly related inputs and ease of development and modification in a single traffic control system. There follows an introduction to the fundamental concepts of fuzzy logic and an outline of the way in which a fuzzy logic control system works. Finally, the ways in which a fuzzy logic traffic control system might help to overcome the problems described are explored
