Abstract
The design and implementation of an experimental local area network (LAN) using optical fiber as the transmission medium are presented. Carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) protocol based on the IEEE 802.3 standards is adopted for the system design, and the LAN interface cards for PC networking are built with VLSI processor chips. Certain CD techniques suitable for the optical fiber medium are explored
