Abstract :
We build on our previous work on best basis selection algorithms in large tree-structured dictionaries, previously used to construct effective image coders based on block and lapped transforms. In the present paper, we use such algorithms to select the optimal tiling for the motion compensation step in video compression. We illustrate the effectiveness of this approach by showing that our tiling selection method results in up to 18% savings in bit rate as compared to the H.264 tiling selection, for several standard video sequences.
