Abstract
In this paper, it is shown that the coding efficiency of the current video compression standard H.264/AVC is not invariant to the orientation of the image. The reversible operations rotation (90°, 180°, 270°) and image flipping (vertical or horizontal) affect the overall performance. In this paper, we analyze this problem in detail and propose an advanced scanning scheme to overcome it. The experimental results presented in this paper confirm that for the same bit rate, our approach can improve the PSNR up to 1 dB compared to H.264/AVC.
