Abstract :
This paper presents the results of a survey conducted by RAFAEL-`hazards of electromagnetic radiation to personnel (HERP)´ in the vicinity of sectorial radio relay stations (SRRS) operated by cellular telephone carriers in Israel. The major conclusions of the HERP survey are: the power densities in the vicinity of the SRRS were found to be below the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) general public permissible exposure limits (PEL). Typical radiation levels were less than 10% of the IRPA PEL. At some of the sites the total power density as measured with a broadband radiation monitor exceeded 0.5-1 mW/cm2 (PEL at 890 MHz=0.44 mW/cm2). A narrowband measurement that was performed using antennas and a spectrum analyzer was necessary for extracting the exact radiation spectra of the SRRS which never exceeded 5%-10% of IRPA PEL
