Abstract :
The Kyoto Prefectural Police HQ began operating an advanced mobile information system (AMIS) which provides traffic information to drivers through infrared beacons in December 1996 and has since then been amplifying the system, resulting in an increase in the installation density of infrared beacons within the central part of Kyoto City. The Police HQ collected and analyzed information uplinked from vehicles equipped with a VICS-specific in-vehicle unit capable of two-way communication with infrared beacons and made clear the characteristics of trips within the city and also the possibility of applying uplinked information to signal control
