Abstract
The authors present a case history of the planning of a fiber optic based Ethernet that interconnects four hospitals, the Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston´s Longwood Medical Area. The network is designed to support terminal access, electronic mail, text file transfer, and image transfer among these institutions. The history shows the political and technical evolution of the Medical Area networking capability
