Abstract :
The paper reviews the various categories of 275 and 400 kV line faults in Eskom´s Main Transmission System. The reasons for the relatively high number of faults in the category “unknown causes” are by hypothesis attributed to birds and a light pollution, light wetting flashover phenomenon. The paper describes the scope of field and laboratory work designed to test this latter hypothesis, as well as some results already obtained
