Abstract :
The notion of wavelet transforms and their application to image compression are discussed. It is noted that, at higher compression ratios, the performance of the Haar transform based algorithm is visually superior to that of the JPEG DCT-based one. The edges are as clearly defined as for the DCT-based algorithm and the blockiness is significantly less severe than for the latter method. The implementation of this transform and its inversion can be accomplished in integer arithmetic, which makes it desirable for many applications requiring real-time performance
