Abstract :
The physical properties of different forwarding paths in photonic switches with shared wavelength converters are considered to perform loss and signal-to-noise ratio evaluations. This analysis is essential to assess photonic switching feasibility in future optical networks. The relationships among architectural choices and physical performance are discussed. The results show that the physical constraints limit component and switch sizes and outline guidelines for possible further research.
