Abstract
An analysis is presented of the MTBPF (mean time between pointer failure) caused by misinterpretation of the pointer value due to transmission errors. The model used to analyze the MTBPF for the payload pointer is based on pointer rules taken from the American National Standard T1.105-1988. With dual one-bit error correction on both the new data flag enable and the pointer value, an improvement of at least 0.5×(ber)-1 times is achieved if the bit error rate is ⩽10-3. With the addition of one more bit, the error-correcting capability of the pointer results in only at most 8.5 times improvement over the 1-b case
