Abstract
This paper describes an optimum trellis-coded M -ary frequency-shift-keying (FSK) signaling technique. The trellis code is derived and its spectrum and error rate presented. A computer simulation of the trellis-coded FM modem is performed to access performance to verify the analytically predicted performance under conditions not readily analyzed mathematically (such as fading and dispersion) and to study implementation tradeoffs. The effect of shaped data, IF filtering, and adjacent channel interference on the error rate is also presented
