Abstract :
A solid-state modulator rated for 50 kV, 120 A, 4 μs and 250 Hz has been designed. The discharging circuit of the modulator is being tested at ~33 kV, 40-80 A, at a maximum pulse repetition rate of 30 pps. The paper discusses development and testing of prototype discharging circuit on resistive load and magnetron. The technique used for measurement of pulse transformer leakage inductance, distributed capacitance and stray primary circuit series inductance will also be discussed in detail. It is necessary to have Energy Storage Capacitors with low ESL for these applications (ESL <; 40 nH). The method used for evaluating the ESL of locally available metalized polypropylene capacitors will also be presented.
