  • Abstract
The use of axial explosive initiation systems enables the design of explosive-driven power supplies that are, in effect, integral explosive generators and pulse forming circuits in one package. We feature the magnetically insulated ion diode as a low impedance load, about 1 to 2 Ohms, that would be appropriate for one of these designs. Of the several generator studies of simultaneous helical generators presented in several conferences, we chose a conceptual design by Caird and Fowler that was presented in the 4/sup th/ Megagauss Technology and Pulsed Applications Conference in 1986 for this modeling study. The results of this study are very encouraging. The original model may be used with different parameters to begin to design a simultaneous helical generator that produces a generator impedance, dL/sub g//dt, /spl lsim/1 Ohm, peak currents of about 500 kA, and peak voltages of about 500 kV with a pulse width of /spl lsim/1 /spl mu/s.
