Abstract :
A new, simple, fast, accurate and nondestructive method is presented for determining the diameter of optical fibers. The technique is based on an analysis of the forward near-axis far-field interference pattern from an optical fiber illuminated by a laser beam perpendicular to its axis, thus it is called the method of forward near-axis far-field interference. A geometrical-optics analysis shows that the position of dark fringes in the pattern determines the fiber diameter. This method is superior to conventional methods. Good agreement between the theoretical analysis and experimental data is obtained. The measuring accuracy reaches ±0.4 μm, and may soon be further improved
