Abstract
This paper presents the results obtained in the real scale validation tests in the laboratory, of a large 6.2 kV, 40 MVAR Voltage Sourced Converter (VSC). The VSC forms part of a 47 MVAR Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) demonstrator, of which 33 MVAR are provided by the VSC. This demonstrator, the first built in Europe of its kind, has been commissioned in joint collaboration with the Spanish transmission system operator (REE), and is connected in series with a 220 kV line in the Barcelona region. It aims to control the power flow by dynamically changing the series inductive or capacitive impedance in grids that suffer from a high penetration of intermittent and geographically dispersed wind generation.
