Abstract :
Formation of a knowledge framework about modularity guidelines is the core of modular design. Moreover, the framework takes shape in the interaction of accumulation and re-use. To achieve the tasks mentioned-above, there needs modeling techniques to prepare information structure not only for decomposition, but also for specific design and family optimization. In this paper, a modeling approach is proposed based on DSM (design structure matrix) and RCN (relationship constraint network). Firstly, purpose and framework of this method is given according to the close-loop process of modular design. Secondly, the evolutionary information and correlative information among elements is respectively organized in the form of DSM and RCN. Then, product family is established based on modular layouts, including process and product, which provides a two-way channel for decomposition and optimization of modular scheme. Finally, an engine case is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed approach.
