Abstract :
As one of the core components of ERCOT IT infrastructure for the upcoming Texas nodal power market, energy management system plays a critical role in maintaining grid reliability and security. The EMS functions also play important roles in aiding market management system in day-ahead market, reliability unit commitment and security constraint economic dispatch, and providing data to market information system for system information posting and to commercial system for market settlement. This paper discusses these multiple roles of the energy management system. It brings ERCOT experience in employing the EMS system to address grid security while sharing EMS functionality with other market-facing IT systems.
