Abstract
The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) was used to assess the effects of spinal and epidural anesthesia upon the control of the heart by the autonomic nervous system. Anesthesia blocked important reflex loops and resulted in no change in mean heart rate, a decrease in the magnitude of the HR spectrum, and a reduction in regularity of the heart rate dynamics. HRV provides information concerning the integrity of the cardiovascular control system not readily apparent from the mean HR
