Abstract
The paper discusses the different failure mechanisms and some precautionary measures that can be put to use to prevent premature failure. The failure mechanisms discussed are: insulation system failure (moisture, vibration, over-temperature, system surges, over-speed, earthing practices); and mechanical failure (bearings failure, misalignment, air gap, out of balance, critical speed and resonance, corrosion)
