Abstract :
Fast storage devices such as advanced batteries or flywheels are being investigated and deployed in pilot implementations for use in providing ancillary services to ISOs, especially regulation services. A detailed dynamic model was developed of ISO operations including traditional generation resources, loads, real time energy markets, regulation, AGC, and the interconnected grid and other control areas. This model was used to investigate the feasibility and benefits of using fast storage devices for system regulation and to explore alternative regulation services that could exploit the characteristics of fast storage for enhanced system performance. The work concludes that fast storage is attractive for these applications.
