Abstract :
Three approaches are presented for predicting the magnitude and distribution of the transient voltages in the stator winding of an electric machine subjected to a steep-fronted surge. In this paper, multiconductor transmission line theory forms the basis of the three methods described. These methods utilise some aspects of the previous works to achieve simplification of solution without loss of accuracy. Indirect boundary integral equation method has been used to calculate the necessary capacitances in this analysis. Duality existing between the electric field and the magnetic field has been use to calculate the necessary inductances. Results predicted by these methods have been compared with experimental results. Recommendations for machines fed from a frequency converter are also included
