The requirements of the European Machinery Directive and associated standards relating to stop controls, emergency stopping and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) are reviewed. The use of programmable electronics, such as programmable logic controllers, to implement safety functions, is discussed in the context of the Machinery Directive and relevant European and International standards
