Abstract
Biorthogonal wavelet filter banks combined with symmetric periodic extension have been successfully used in image coding and image denoising for many years. Since the symmetric periodic extension can only be applied to linear-phase filters, only biorthogonal wavelets can be used. However, multiwavelets could have properties like symmetry and orthogonality, short support and a high number of vanishing moments, which wavelets cannot possess at the same time. Therefore multiwavelets are very promising as successors to wavelets in these fields. In this paper different extension methods are applied to multiwavelet filter banks and their effects on image coding are discussed
