Abstract :
As time goes by, the heavy traffic exceeds the capacity of most unsignalized roundabouts, especially Large Multi-branch Roundabouts (LMR). In this paper, we propose an innovative control model of LMR based on accurate traffic perception. We present a concept of Optimal Number of Vehicles within the Roundabout (ONVR) and find that the LMR can get a higher real-time capacity if the Current Number of Vehicles within the Roundabout is kept on the ONVR level. At last, we apply a simulation experiment to Zhongshan Square in Dalian, China. The result shows that the real-time capacity of Zhongshan square is raised by about 40% and the vehicle travel time is reduced by 30% on average during the rush hour.
