Abstract
This paper presents and critically analyses the accumulation of solid organic waste and its management in a sustainable way to reduce the risk to human health, environmental burden and maintain ecosystem. This review focuses on the process of anaerobic digestion which is considered to be viable options for recycling the organic fraction of solid waste. Biogas and other energy rich compounds obtained from such resources with microbes such as bacteria, fungi and archaea is increasing the twin objectives of resource recycling and pollution mitigation and will meet the world´s ever increasing energy requirements in future. In view of the inherent characteristics of vegetable market wastes, Biomethanation is seemed top be a lucrative process for Bio-energy generation and manure production in recent years under Waste-to-Energy programme. A demonstration plant of capacity 30 tonnes per day was established for Biomethanation of vegetable market waste at Koyambedu Chennai, has been taken into study. As a part of recent developments in the implementation of Kyoto Protocol for reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions into atmosphere, majority of waste to energy, biomass based bio-energy projects are nourishing for implementation of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in many parts of the world. The present paper delineates the performance of the plant in terms of methane gas production considering the seasonal variations in the wastes availability in Biomethanation of vegetable market waste with special reference to Indian scenario.
