Abstract
The use of cost-effective ultra-light medium voltage power lines for remote rural communities is proposed. This will require the development of an electronic on-load tap changer to cope with the excessive voltage drops. The tap changer will be used with typical rural distribution transformers and a novel feature will be that it will contain intelligence so that the tap position can be determined not only from the voltage but also from the current
