Abstract :
Batteries are the Achilles´ heel in power supply systems which include energy storage through series connected battery strings. Even though the duty cycles of batteries in UPS applications are the least troublesome, in mission critical UPS applications batteries are replaced prematurely to guarantee reliability. In hybrid electric vehicles and the Hygen application, batteries are subjected to abusive operating conditions and severe duty cycles. Popular batteries and established battery management systems have proved to be unreliable. An energy storage system, utilizing advanced lead-acid batteries and a special battery monitoring and control system, was developed for the Hygen application
