ASSEMIC: a European research and training network for advanced post-graduate education

Micro-handling and assembly are fundamental issues in the field of microtechnologies, an area worldwide recognized as highly relevant for the global economy and for the world industry. In order to prepare the new generation of engineers to work in this field, specially adapted training schemes are needed. An adequate training system for preparing engineers in this area must not only combine all scientific and technical disciplines involved (mechanics, control theory, material physics, electronics and microsystems design...) but also provide an industrial perspective and additional skills. The European Research and Training Network "advanced methods and tools for handling and assembly in microtechnology" (ASSEMIC) addresses this need at the European scale, providing advanced training for early-stage and experienced researchers in an ambitious 4 years duration collaborative research project with 14 participants from 10 different countries. To guarantee the success in its mission, ASSEMIC is based on the principles of multidisciplinarity, intersectorial character, a comprehensive training programme, and a well-defined R&D programme.
