Abstract :
This paper provides an overview of the major communications issues facing organisations as they move from the host-based computing model, through to a client/server computing environment. While many organisations have already proceeded some way down the client/server development route, almost all organisations are strategically placed to implement corporate client/server systems in the forseeable future. However, a major stumbling block facing organisations is how to manage sucessfully both the evolving client/server systems and the legacy computer systems within the existing communications infrastructure. This problem is exacerbated by the presence of multiple hardware, software, protocols and operating platforms within an organisation´s IT facility. As the true cost of ownership and impact of `downsizing´ invariably filter upwards in the organisation, increased pressure is starting to be felt by IT departmental heads to reduce costs, despite rising complexity and increased business and user demands. The corporate communications infrastructure-having been largely overshadowed by significant developments in the client/server and workgrouping arena-is now emerging as a focal point for review and scrutiny
