Abstract
This Paper analyzes the application of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) to prevent the transient voltage instability of power systems due to the presence of large induction motor loads at the terminals of long transmission lines. The analysis is supported by transient time simulations for the complete power system following large disturbances. The effect of induction motor loads on transient voltage stability of power system is studied by applying a disturbance. A disturbance is created either by line tripping or applying a three phase fault. Voltage instability phenomenon is simulated by adding induction motors in parallel and increasing the load. The effect of STATCOM on transient voltage stability of power system is studied. Transient stability analysis is carried out for two sample systems namely 3-bus and 9-bus systems and the results are presented.
