  • Abstract
Electric motors use a high percentage of the delivered electrical energy in a developed economy, and the cost of electricity used during their working life can often be a hundred times greater than the motor purchase price. Even so, improving motor efficiency has not until recently been a priority issue. This paper suggests some reasons for this and outlines some of the work done to produce a range of new energy efficient induction motors which can be sold profitably at standard prices. Areas of further development, particularly in materials and manufacturing technology, are also suggested
