Abstract :
A new concept of unequal error protection (UEP) in the physical layer of a mobile cellular communication system is presented. With various potential extensible schemes of the proposed scheme, UEP for multiple applications having different QoS requirements (ftp type best effort application and video streaming type near-real time application are used for this paper) is described and associated computer simulation results are provided. The key idea of the proposed scheme is applying a different amount of error protection in the physical layer to each application in accordance with its QoS attributes. Through the computer simulations, we have shown that the proposed scheme offers increased QoS controllability for each application and enhanced goodput for delay-insensitive applications compared to the performance of the conventional systems without physical layer UEP.
