Abstract :
Properties of range-Doppler images obtained from wideband pulsed bistatic radars are determined, taking into account relative translational motion of the transmitter, target and receiver, as well as the rotational motion of the target. If the bistatic angle is nonzero and changing, the gradients of range and range rate are not perpendicular to each other as they are with monostatic radar. The mapping from relative range, range-rate to target Cartesian coordinates, requires a skew coordinate transformation which distorts the point spread function (PSF) in shear. The consequences of this mapping for image resolution, for the limits on linear imaging and for image ambiguities and sidelobes are shown. These predicted image properties are verified by comparison with an image calculated from simulated data.
