Abstract :
The configuration and performance of a solid-state transmitter developed for airport surveillance radars are described. This transmitter achieves stability that exceeds that of any available tube-type or solid-state transmitter. Higher radar stability is required for enhanced target detection and to improve detection of low radar cross section returns such as gust fronts and dry microbursts (weather phenomena which have caused airplane accidents on landing and takeoff). The new solid-state transmitter also provides improved availability and maintainability, critical parameters for airport surveillance radars (ASRs), which must operate reliably and continuously to maintain safe air traffic flow.
