Abstract :
There is increasing interest in the use of cells and batteries in hazardous areas. The interest ranges across all types of electrochemical systems currently available commercially, and all sized from small individual cells for microcomputer memory support to substantial stand-by battery power supplies. Traditionally batteries have been located in nonhazardous areas wherever possible, but this is becoming less attractive for technical and economic reasons. The author shows that is is therefore necessary to consider the requirements that should apply for safety in hazardous areas
