Abstract :
The authors describe a development in relaying hardware and philosophy which has been made possible by DSPs and industrial grade PCs. The goal of an open relaying philosophy can be realized. The utility would be able to choose its relaying functions to suit its particular requirements. Details are given of a prototype design capable of being assembled and configured by a utility. Results of tests on this prototype using the real time digital simulator at the Manitoba HVDC Research Center are presented. Some disturbance recordings taken from an installed unit on a 500 kV line are shown.
