Abstract
Passive optical network (PON)-based systems are a solution for small and medium-sized customers, with point-to-point fiber connections being justified only for large customers. Some of the advantages of using PON-based systems in deployment scenarios traditionally associated with other technologies are presented and discussed. The use of teleconferencing over a PON (TPON) equipment to serve larger customers and to provide service over other transmission media may be beneficial. Such deployment would help to rationalize the range of equipment in use in the network, simplify management and maintenance procedures and reduce the range of equipment spares held. The development of a compatible modular range of units that could be used to provide services to a wide range of market segments in many different geotypes is illustrated
